The new Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet starters are Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, just three of all Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet. Starter Pokemon are the very first partner Pokemon you'll get. Like in previous Pokemon generations, the choices for Starter Pokemon include a Grass-type, a Fire-type, and a Water-type. This guide covers the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet starters and their evolutions, with advice on which starter Pokemon to choose.

Sprigatito is the Grass-type Starter Pokemon for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and is described as a "capricious, attention-seeking Grass Cat Pokemon." It looks like a pastel green cat with darker, warm green accents, with fluffy cheeks and tail. Its eyes are a dusty rose. Sprigatito's Ability, Overgrow, is exclusive to Grass-type Starter Pokemon and their evolutions. It powers up Grass-type moves when the Pokemon's HP is low. Fuecoco is the Fire-type Starter Pokemon for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and is described as a "laid-back Fire Croc Pokemon that does things at its own pace." It looks like a happy, chibi bipedal croc with large feet and small arms. Fuecoco is primarily orange-red with yellow accents and a cream face and under-belly. Fuecoco sort of looks like a chili pepper. Fuecoco's Ability, Blaze, is exclusive to Fire-type Starter Pokemon and their evolutions. It powers up Fire-type moves when the Pokemon's HP is low. Fuecoco is the most defensive of the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet starters and is a Special Attacker.

Quaxly is the Water-type Starter Pokemon for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and is described as an "earnest and tidy Duckling Pokemon." It looks like a small white duck with a yellow beak, but with light blue (leaning toward cyan) feet. Quaxly's eyes are blue, and the light blue feathers atop its head look like a hat with a white symbol that could resemble the letter W, waves, or wings. Quaxly's Ability, Torrent, is exclusive to Water-type Starter Pokemon and their evolutions. It powers up Water-type moves when the Pokemon's HP is low. Quaxly has the highest Attack stat of the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet starters, and its defenses and speed are between Fuecoco and Sprigatito's.

Scarlet and Violet's Starter Evolutions

Sprigatito Evolutions

Sprigatito's final evolution is Meowscarada.

Sprigatito Floragato Meowscarada
Lv.16 Lv. 36

Meowscarada, the Magician Pokemon, is a Dark- and Grass-type. Meowscarada is even faster than a Dugtrio, and just as fast as the Dragon-type Noivern. It's only outpaced by a single non-legendary new Pokemon at all. Though Meowscarada's Attack-stat isn't the best, it's definitely still good. Meowscarada's signature move, Flower Trick is a physical Grass-type attack with which never misses and always crits - essentially making its base damage a whopping 105. Unfortunately, it's hard to ignore that 7 types resist Grass-type attacks, making it one of the most resisted types in all of Pokemon. Luckily, its dual-type, Dark, hits all of those types for neutral damage, at least. This dual-typing is a double-edged sword, making Meowscarada weak to seven types - the most of all the final starter evolutions.

Fuecoco Evolutions

Fuecoco's final evolution is Skeledirge.

Fuecoco Crocalor Skeledirge
Lv. 16 Lv. 36

Skeledirge, the Singer Pokemon, is a Fire- and Ghost-type. Skeledirge's typing is the most defensive of the starter’s, though the five types it is weak to are especially common, and it doesn’t learn many moves to counter its own weaknesses. Overall, Skeledirge is the most defensive option, but still stacked with a good Special Attack stat and moves to buff it and improve its survivability. Skeledirge's signature move is Torch Song, a special Fire-type attack with 80 base power that buffs its good Special Attack stat even more.

Quaxly Evolutions

Quaxly evolves into Quaxwell, then Quaquaval.

Quaxly Quaxwell Quaquaval
Lv. 16 Lv. 36

Quaquaval, the Dancer Pokemon, is a Water- and Fighting-type. It has access to Swords Dance to buff its Attack stat even more, and a Water-type move with priority to make up for its speed. As for its final typing, this again is between the other starters, though the types it is weak to are less common than the Fuecoco evolutions are, and offensively, it’s pretty good. This is the more balanced of the three, but still excels as a great attacker. Quaquaval's signature move is the physical Water-type Aqua Step with 80 base power that also buffs its middling speed.
