The Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game is widely known for its complex mechanics and high barrier to entry for new players. Yu-Gi-Oh! can be difficult to learn, and the anime isn't a great way to learn the TCG's complex rules. Fortunately for casual fans and newcomers, Duel Links features classic Yu-Gi-Oh! anime characters who provide an easy-to-follow tutorial that makes learning to play fun and engaging.

Duel Links launched on PC and mobile devices in early 2017, and utilizes a smaller card pool while still featuring all of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s effects and mechanics. The gameplay functions similarly to the paper TCG, but uses a special format called Speed Duels. Upon starting the game, players are greeted with an interactive, step-by-step guide on how to Speed Duel. Players choose from several different characters across all generations of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, and each character has unique Skills that can be used during duels.

One aspect met with criticism is Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links' heavy reliance on a gacha system to acquire cards. Players use an in-game currency called Gems to acquire packs and Structure Decks. However, aside from acquiring cards via in-game events or the Card Trader, players have no reliable way to obtain specific cards needed for competitive play.

But despite the criticism for being pay-to-win, Duel Links garnered a large playerbase for itself and received widespread critical acclaim, offering new and returning players an easily accessible way to play Yu-Gi-Oh! on-the-go. With a smaller playing field, fun character Skills, and quick and engaging gameplay, Duel Links allows fans of the anime and casual duelists to play the beloved card game in a simpler, more casual setting.

Master Duel's major advantage over Duel Links is its card crafting system. Duel Links relies on players opening packs to acquire cards, whereas Master Duel allows players to freely dismantle cards to create new ones using Crafting Points (CP). Players can still acquire cards by spending Gems to purchase Secret Packs or Master Packs from the in-game Shop, but crafting helps keep the game free-to-play friendly.
